Birthday Wishes For Churchill Alemao
Going through Goan news paper today, I found myself face to face with the great Churchill Alemao, a good number of times, Goans greeting him on his 61st birthday, quite an innings for a man of his size and stature, it's been common knowledge that his legs have failed him on more occasions than one but still for the love of Goa and his Goan people he still staggers on his uneasy feet. He has been hailed as the man of the masses, and with all that's been said about him on the papers, I am sure even the Great Winston Churchill, the English leader must be turning green with envy in his grave.
A leader born of the people's movement during the Konkanni agitation, Goans looked upto him for deliverance, and for some time he was there for the people, but like all good things have to come to an end, so did Churchill's good era, he bulldozed his way into Goan politics through the buffer support of the Konkanni movement and in no time sat on the chair of power by means more foul than fair, but on that chair he was bitten by the bug of power and corruption. Not that he was a knight in shining armour during his transition from a mere cook sailing on the high seas to an entrepreneur with a fleet of trawlers, from owning a mere volleyball team to a multimillion rupees football team. No doubt he has done a lot initially but he certainly could have done a lot more for Goa and Goans
As he grew in power and stature he started getting himself deeper into the rut, so much so he started detesting the very own people who helped him to power, a novice in politics suddenly become a master craftsman in the art and turned the tables on the veterans. With all his wrangling people stared to see through him but in no time, he played the ace of spades that was up his sleeves, the Mopa airport, again people formed a wave behind him only to be ditched, hiding behind the MOU promised, which unfortunately has yet to be signed.
Though Churchill Alemao could have made a great difference to the way things are being run in Goa, he has been a silent bystander to the atrocities carried out on Goa and Goans, while the people move like sheep without a shepherd, in their agitations against mega housing and illegal mining, he has failed to utter a word against the defaulters, in and around his own village, sand dunes have disappeared, all sorts of illegalities have been approved by the panchayat bodies, and he still doesn't utter a word. If he was the man of the masses he would have been with the masses and not with the elite few who are rapping, plundering and butchering Goa.
Mr. Churchill Alemao has indeed let the people of Goa down with his inaction in supporting the masses, he has proved that the company of the elite, with money to burn in better than the company of the masses. He has laid waste the dreams and aspiration of the people of Goa and I ask all his supporters, how can you'll support this man who has turned his back on mother Goa ? How can you'll support this man who has allowed the rape of Mother Goa, your own Mother Goa ?
On his 61st birthday I ask the mighty Churchill Alemao and all his thirty nine colleagues, would you all remain silent if your own mothers were raped ?
